Cache Tech Community - Astrophotography Deep Dive - May 2026

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, May 30th, 2026
  • Time: 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM (MST)
  • Location: Bridgerland Technical College, West Building, Room 1860, 1410 N 1000 W, Logan, UT 84321

Event Overview

Join us for a deep dive into the fundamentals of astrophotography with an emphasis on how you can get started with gear you already have. In this talk, we’ll explore how gear is not what makes the image and knowledge of physics, processing, and application of technique are the largest contributors to an amazing image. In Utah, we are blessed with some of the best dark skies in the world. Come join us and learn how you can improve your captures of the night sky to share with others.

What You’ll Learn

This talk will be focused on a technical deep dive but assumes no prior knowledge with astrophotography. Prior knowledge of photography will help, but questions regarding fundamental terms are always welcome.

  • Planning - The best shots start days or weeks before you take the image. Learn how to plan landscape and deep space astrophotos.
  • Acquisition - Learn how to get the best performance out of the gear you already have, and when an upgrade may make sense.
  • Calibration - No matter your gear, there are additional steps you need to take in order to render the best image you can from your setup.
  • Stacking and Processing - Cameras are not powerful enough to capture all the detail in the night sky alone in one shot. Learn how to combine hours of data into a single image. Learn what free software exists today, and when paid software might be the right move.

What To Bring

You should bring a laptop or tablet to take notes, but mostly an inquisitive mind and an openness to ask questions. The world of astrophotography can be overwhelming, and one session will not be able to cover everything, but this should set you up with the basics and provide ample pathways for growth.
