Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, March 28th, 2026
  • Time: 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM (MST)

Event Overview

Join us for “RAM Fundamentals,” a deep dive into one of the most essential components in every computer. Our very own nonopey will be walking us through how RAM works, how systems use it, and why it plays such a critical role in everything from booting your OS to running your favorite applications.

What You’ll Learn

nonopey’s presentation will cover the fundamentals of RAM from the ground up, including:

  • What RAM actually is: how it differs from storage, why it’s volatile, and what role it plays in the memory hierarchy alongside CPU caches and disk
  • How RAM works at a hardware level: a look at how data is read and written, the basics of memory addressing, and what’s happening on the DIMM itself
  • How systems use RAM: how your operating system manages memory allocation, what happens when you run out of physical memory, and how virtual memory and paging come into play
  • Types and specs that matter: DDR generations, clock speeds, latency timings, dual-channel vs. single-channel configurations, and what to actually look for when choosing RAM
  • Troubleshooting and real-world scenarios: common RAM-related issues, how to diagnose them, and why understanding memory matters whether you’re building a PC, writing software, or managing servers

Whether you’ve never thought about what’s inside your computer or you just want to fill in some gaps, this talk is designed to be approachable and practical.
